Gardening for Good, 9th night

Gardensong Singalong and Polkafest

Dazzled by Peter and Phyllis’ Gardensong Singalong

Quite the surprise when we arrived at the garden tonight, last night’s storm had done done some rearrangement! Our tomato plants have gotten quite large and pretty top-heavy. With some help from the wind, seems that the plants were trying to escape their cages, and fell flat on their faces…”I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”. So, we gave them a hand by re-staking and using some twine to reign in the flailing arms. Hopefully the roots were deep and strong enough to have kept them grounded.

Our harvest list for the week is as follows:
-Hmong long beans
-Broccoli
-Radishes
-Basil
-Hot peppers

We moved to the big tent by the shed for our Gardensong Singalong with Peter Leidy and Phyllis Noble. It was a delightful celebration of song, dance, and community. Julie led us in a frolicking Polka Dance, where most folks joined in. Laura was inspired by the song, Here Comes the Sun, and treated us to her sufi dancing. Ken was celebrating his birthday, so we got to sing a rousing version of Happy Birthday to celebrate his life.

Peter and Phyllis did a fabulous job finding songs that were garden related. They even penned some new verses for the Beer Barrel Polka, which reflects some of the great things supported gardeners are learning and enjoying in the garden this summer.

Beer Barrel Polka

Roll out the barrel
We’ll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel
We’ve got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararell, ring out a song of good cheer
Now’s the time to roll the barrel, for the gang’s all here

JULIE grows flowers, DOUG’S jalapeños are hot!
Troy Gardens produce, we’re gonna have us a lot!
KEN with his weeding, and JO JO mulching away
JESSE keeps an eye on the water, vegs and flowers all day

Roll out the hoses, summer has been very dry
Roll out the hoses, when there’s no rain from the sky
ANDY’S cucumbers, RICK and his bountiful beans
Tomatoes tended by LAURA, not brown but green!

Roll out the hoses, summer has been very dry
Roll out the hoses, when there’s no rain from the sky
Roll out the hoses, care for the earth like we should
Growing our food together, when we’re Gardening for Good!

Roll out the barrel
We’ll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel
We’ve got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararell, ring out a song of good cheer
Now’s the time to roll the barrel, for the gang’s all here!
